What happens when men dance?
This episode focuses on masculine identities and the complex status of the male dancer in society in general, and in Israel in particular. Through conversations with Niv Sheinfeld, Oren Laor, Gilad Yerushalmi, and others, and an exploration of works by Roy Assaf, Yossi Berg & Oded Graf, and Adi Boutros, we delve into how notions of masculinity are negotiated across various social settings—such as the kibbutz, the military, and the dance field itself. We also explore encounters with queer and LGBTQ+ stereotypes within the dance works themselves. This episode is about new masculinities—ones willing to expose complexity and challenge prevailing social perceptions of the male dancer. It seeks to deconstruct national ideals of strong masculinity and to broaden the physical and emotional spectrum of male embodiment to include sensitivity, compassion, fragility, and softness.
