Episode 7
Tamir Ginz -Dance as a Communicative Drama
From the series 'Movement Material - Conversations with choreographers'.(Recorded in Winter of 2022)
In this episode, Tamir Ginz discusses his perception of dance as a form of "communicative drama" – a means of conveying emotional and conceptual messages through the body. Ginz emphasizes the importance of virtuosity, though not as a merely technical value: he seeks dancers with a high level of physical mastery, as well as the ability to move emotionally and commit fully to the stage. According to him, movement must be infused with meaning and presence. The movement language of Kamea language draws from classical ballet, modern dance, and contemporary dance. He highlights the human qualities of the ideal dancer: someone devoted, egoless, open to group work, and willing to live in the city of Be’er Sheva – as part of the Kamea community. He describes himself as a choreographer-architect, one who designs structure and meaning while engaging the dancers and preserving their distinct personal signatures.
Dr. Idit Suslik reflects on Ginz’s distinction between movement materials and the way they become imbued with meaning – through intention, emotion, and dramaturgical response. She points to the tension between the interpretive space available to the dancers and their role as partners with individual voices, within a choreographic structure that he shapes. From this observation, Dr. Suslik identifies Kamea as a distinct dance community.
